Changes Are Coming!
Amma’s Urban Homestead is Going Country
I am happy to share that my retirement and move to the country is finally in sight! In 2026, I will be retiring and searching for a few acres in the country where my homestead can grow. I talk to a lot of people who are in urban areas but want to move to acreage and start homesteading on a larger scale. It can be overwhelming, especially for anyone who has never lived on a farm or even in the country!
Going forward, I plan to use this website to share my preparations for the big move in hopes that my experiences will help those who want to do the same. There are so many things to consider! A few of the topics I will address are:
- Finding suitable land
- Raw land vs existing home
- Water sources (water providers, wells, streams/springs, rainwater catchment)
- Waste disposal (sewer, septic, composting toilets, graywater systems)
- Soil
- Building a house and outbuildings
- Fencing
- Gardens, orchards, and pastures
- Animals
It’s an exciting adventure and many folks, as my mom used to say, “jump in with both feet”! Unfortunately, that can lead to disappointment, burnout, and failure. I hope that by sharing my journey, I can help others in their journey to a successful rural homestead.
