Preparing for Fall Planting
It is hard to we are halfway through summer! Many vegetables can be planted from July through September. Take a look at the planting calendar for ideas.
Now is the time to think about your fall garden. Cool weather crops like broccoli, brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, cabbage, and lettuce can be planted as we move into the cooler months of fall. If you want to start your own plants to transplant, look at the seed starting chart on the calendar page. Ideally, start your seeds four to six weeks before the desired planting date.
This is also a great time to have your soil tested. Summer crops will be finishing soon freeing space for fall crops. Have your soil tested now so you will know what it needs to provide the best growing environment for your new plants. No matter what the soil test shows, adding compost will boost organic matter, improve soil structure, and provide food for worms, fungi, and other desirable soil organisms.
When you consider the layout of your fall and winter planting areas, remember that the position of the sun changes with the seasons. In summer, the sun follows a path that puts it almost directly overhead at noon. By December, the sun hangs toward the south. Areas that were in full sun in July may well be in full shade by December. Structures and trees on the south side of your planting areas will cast shade over them in fall and winter.
Happy gardening!
